STEVE COOGAN: I PHONED IN HOLLYWOOD ROLES (from YAHOO)

Steve Coogan: I phoned in Hollywood roles (Exclusive)

Alan Partridge star said US movie career was a ‘waste of time’.

Steve Coogan told Yahoo! Movies that his Hollywood career - which included roles
in ‘Around The World In 80 Days’, ‘Tropic Thunder’ and ‘Percy Jackson And
The Lightening Thief’ - was a “waste of time”.

“When I have gone over there and played ‘part number three’ in a film like
‘The Other Guys’ [with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg], it’s just unremarkable.
I could phone it in frankly. I’ve got no love for that work. You go and flirt with it
and then come back home and do what you’re good at.

[Related story: Coogan on 'strip club research']
[Related story: More Alan Partridge details revealed]

“I just feel that a lot of that [Hollywood] work is a naive experiment. I met
some nice people working on those projects, but I don’t feel any love for them.”

’80 Days’ saw Coogan star opposite Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger in
an ill-judged adaptation of the Jules Verne classic, while in the critically panned
film ‘Night at the Museum’ movies he played a miniature version of Roman
general Octavius.

“What I learnt [from going to Hollywood] was to go with my instincts and
do the things I actually want to do.”

Suffice to say, he’s much more proud of the upcoming Alan Partridge movie
(‘Alpha Papa’) and current project ‘The Look Of Love’ - a biopic about legendary
Soho publisher/real estate magnate Paul Raymond, which is in UK cinemas now.

“I think Paul Raymond is far more interesting than Hugh Hefner,
for example,” he said. “Hugh Hefner is 50 years of bonking 20-year-old women.
There’s not a lot you can say about that really.”

The life of Raymond on the other hand was “sometimes funny, sometimes a bit
depressing”. The film covers Raymond’s 70s heyday on the Soho party scene,
the creation of adult mag ‘Men Only’ and the death of his daughter Debbie by a
drug overdose in the 1990s.
Coogan told us about the film’s shift of tone. “There’s a scene in the film where
[Raymond] takes class A drugs with his daughter whilst she’s pregnant, which
sounds absolutely horrific, and on one level it is horrific. But whenever I watch
that scene I burst out laughing, which is very odd. And so does the audience.”

Coogan remembers briefly meeting Raymond (who died in 2008) at a theatre
performance in 1990 and did his research on the man, but didn’t want to
impersonate him too directly.

“There are certain witticisms that I say as Paul Raymond that he never would. I
think I’m a funnier person that Paul Raymond was. Though he had this ostensibly
glamourous lifestyle, in some ways he was a dull man. You don’t want the film to be dull.”

CHANNEL 4 TOP BOY AUDITIONS CANCELLED

Hundreds of young acting hopefuls were left disappointed after heading to Hackney for their shot at fame. The show Top Boy, which in it's first season starred Ashley Walters and rapper Kano was advertising for new talent. No previous acting experience necessary!

The Open auditions for Channel 4's critically acclaimed drama was cancelled despite hundreds of young people turning up and without notice leaving many people disappointed.

The casting call was scheduled to take place today (Sunday) at Hoxton Hall, in Hoxton Street, Hackney, between 12pm and 5pm.  The Casting directors said they were looking for black, mixed race, Asian and other "non-white" teenagers aged between 13 and 16 to appear in the second season of Top Boy.

Following the invite, hundreds of young people headed to Hackney for a chance to earn a place on the show. Some reports claim there was more than 2,000 people in the queue.
But organisers started to turn away young hopefuls, who had been queuing for hours, causing anger to erupt in some sections of the crowd.
It has raised questions about whether the auditions were properly organised and what measures had been put in place to protect the young people they had invited.
Actor Walters waded into the debate on Twitter: "Another opportunity wasted to get into the game. Don't blame me!"

One Twitter user said: "Do NOT go to the Top Boy audition it is kicking off down here. I've got my girls and we are going home."

A Met Police spokesman confirmed there had been no reports of violence but said officers did attend to help with crowd dispersal.  There are no plans to reschedule the auditions at this point.

THE MANY FACES OF SHERIDAN SMITH

SHERIDAN SMITH

As Rudi in Gavin & Stacey
It seems there is no stopping Sheridan Smith.  Every time you switch on the TV she's there. As Smithy's sister Rudi in Gavin and Stacey, or Brandy in Benidorm and as Janet in Two Pints of Lager and a Packets of Crisps.
Before Two Pints she played Emma, the girlfriend of Antony, Ralf Little's character, in The Royle Family.  All those roles were played for laughs, but this week she has appeared in two 'straight roles'.  First was in the ITV1 film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel The Scapegoat and in the title role in 'Mrs Biggs', a five episode drama being shown Wednesday nights on ITV1.

As Charmian 'Mrs Biggs'
Sheridan plays the part of Charmian, the wife of the great train robber Ronnie Biggs.  A serious role she says was her toughest yet, and one that was so emotionally challenging she stopped partying to be one hundred percent focussed.  In a recent interview, with The Mirror newspaper, she said “It’s definitely the most challenging role of my career and I wanted to make sure I gave it everything.  When you are playing a real-life character you have a responsibility because someone has really gone through all those things. That puts extra pressure on”.  A role that will no doubt win her some serious awards.

As Elle Woods in Legally Blonde
No stranger to awards, Sheridan has won two Laurence Olivier Awards in two consecutive years. In 2011, she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.  The Daily Telegraph describing her as: "blessed with vitality, warmth, great comic timing and sudden moments of touching vulnerability. She is infinitely more likeable than Reese Witherspoon in the film".

In 2012, she received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for her performance as Doris in the revival of Flare Path.  Her road to becoming a critically acclaimed West End theatre actress goes back to her childhood where she studied dance with the Joyce Mason School of Dancing in Scunthorpe.   She was first seen on our screens as a housemaid in 1999 in the mini-series Wives and Daughters and in a relatively short time has managed to establish herself as one of this country's finest actors.

TOM CRUISE BRIDE AUDITION CLAIMS!

NO MORE BOUNCING ON SOFAS FOR TOM... NOT YET ANYWAY

Loving all the rumours coming out of Hollywood about Tom Cruise and how he allegedly found love.  There seems to be a court case brewing between Tom's church and Vanity Fair magazine... Here is a taster originally published on NME.com

Tom Cruise denies "bride auditions" by Church of ScientologyLawyer dismisses a story claiming
that Scientology leaders held "auditions" to
 find Cruise a partner.
Tom Cruise's lawyer has denied claims that the
Church of Scientology held "auditions" to find
the actor a new partner before he

began dating Katie Holmes.

In an article published by Vanity Fair, it is alleged that Shelly Miscavige,
the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, led a secret project to
pair up Cruise following his split from Penelope Cruz in 2004.
The article claims that Iranian-born British actress Nazanin Boniadi
made it through a month-long recruitment process, then began
dating Cruise before their relationship soured.

However, Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields has now spoken out against the article,

saying Vanity Fair's story is essentially a rehash of tired old lies previously run
in the supermarket tabloids, quoting the same bogus 'sources'. It's long, boring
and false. In the article, it is also claimed that Boniadi was "punished"
after disclosing her relationship with Cruise to a third party. However, a
spokesperson for the Church
of Scientology denied this, telling Vanity Fair:

"The Church does not punish people, especially in [that] manner."

Cruise, 50, is currently single after his five-year marriage to Holmes ended in

divorce in July (2012). He was previously married to Mimi Rogers, who
introduced him to the Church of Scientology, from 1987 to 1990, and to
Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001.

Boniadi is not quoted directly by Vanity Fair, but Oscar-winning screenwriter

and former Scientologist Paul Haggis claims in the article to have heard her
story first-hand. Another former Scientologist told the magazine that he
watched several of Boniadi's alleged audition tapes while working at the
Church's in-house film studio.

BBC1 POINTLESS LOOKING FOR CONTESTANTS

Pointless

| BBC One
Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman The hit BBC One quiz show Pointless is back for a brand new series.
Can you name a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber? Can you name a footballer with more than 100 Premier League goals? Can you name a type of lettuce, or an obscure variety of potato? If so, you could be in with a chance of winning big money.
Four pairs of contestants will be pitted against each other as their general knowledge skills are put to the test. Could you trust your friend, your dad, your girlfriend or your work colleague under pressure? We'd like to hear from pairs of people who think they can take up the challenge.
Auditions will be taking place soon so please get in touch for an application form now, or download one from the link below.
Pointless is produced for the BBC by Endemol UK.
